Kuching, Wednesday – Violons Barbares, a band comprises of three musicians from Bulgaria, France and Mongolia, will be performing at the Rainforest World Music Festival 2016 on the first day of the festival, August 5.
Violons Barbares, or ‘barbaric violins’, performs acoustic traditional music that almost transcend genres from world music into rock, oftentimes moving between pure traditional and modern sounds.
Most of the compositions are traditional and take you on a journey throughout the world, travelling on the wild Mongolian horses, from the melodic, romantic country of France to the more open hearted soul of Bulgaria and all the places that lay between the three countries.
Dandarvaanchig Enkhjargal from Mongolia sings overtone and plays the Morin Khur or horsehead fiddle, Dimitar Gougov from Bulgaria plays gadulka, an instrument with three melodic and 11 resonant strings, while French drummer Fabien Guyot plays everything imaginable to create percussion sounds, be it the African tambourine, drums or even salad bowls.
This year’s Festival is being held on August 5-7 and offers a treasure trove of music, arts, crafts and food from all corners of the globe, with nightly performances from 26 performers and over 23 workshops as well as various day-long cultural stalls spread over the course of three days.
Festival tickets and updates are now available online or from the ticketing agents listed at www.rwmf.net, with pre-sale prices available until August 4.
The weekend event has been voted as one of the top 25 World Music Festivals by Songlines Magazine for six years in a row and is supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak (MTAC) and endorsed by Tourism Malaysia with Malaysia Airlines Berhad as the presenting sponsor.
